How many pages is…

Good to know: Page count is an estimate. Actual pages can change based on font, font size, margins, line spacing, headings, paragraph breaks, images, tables, and other document formatting.

How the calculation works

Pages = Words ÷ Words per page Words = Pages × Words per page Remaining words = Target − Current Days = Remaining words ÷ Daily goal

All results are estimates. Days are rounded up to the next whole day.

How This Estimate Works:

Every number on this page assumes a 12 pt font and 1-inch margins unless stated otherwise. The calculator divides your word count by a words-per-page figure, and its formatting option models page size, margins, font width and line height. Treat all results as estimates and confirm the final count in Word or Google Docs.

How Our Free Words to Pages Calculator Works

The calculator turns your word count into an estimated page count by dividing the words by how many words fit on one page. At the default 250 words per page, a 2,500-word draft comes out to 10.0 pages.

You don't need to count anything by hand. Type a number, or paste your draft and the tool counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs for you as you type.

  1. 1 Pick a mode: Words → Pages, Pages → Words, Text Analyzer, or Manuscript Planner.
  2. 2 Enter your words or text: type a word count, or paste your document into the editor. Your text stays in your browser.
  3. 3 Set the words per page: keep 250, tap a preset such as MLA Style, or open Advanced Page Settings to choose font, size, spacing, margins and paper.
  4. 4 Read your result: see estimated pages, reading time and a formatting-based estimate, then copy the summary with one tap.

How Many Pages Is 500, 1,000, or 2,000 Words?

As a rule of thumb, divide by 500 for single-spaced pages and by 250 for double-spaced pages. The answers below use a 12 pt font and 1-inch margins.

How Many Pages Is 500 Words?

1 page single-spaced · 2 pages double-spaced

A typical short essay, cover letter or blog post. Reading time is about 2–3 minutes.

How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words?

2 pages single-spaced · 4 pages double-spaced

Common for school assignments and long-form articles. Reading time is about 4–5 minutes.

How Many Pages Is 1,500 Words?

3 pages single-spaced · 6 pages double-spaced

A standard college essay length. Reading time is about 6–8 minutes.

How Many Pages Is 2,000 Words?

4 pages single-spaced · 8 pages double-spaced

Typical for a term paper or detailed report. Reading time is about 8–10 minutes.

How Many Pages Is 5,000 or 10,000 Words?

5,000 words: 10 pages single-spaced · 20 pages double-spaced

10,000 words: 20 pages single-spaced · 40 pages double-spaced

That covers long reports, dissertation chapters and short stories. At this length, headings, figures and references can add several pages, so check the draft itself.

How Many Words Fit on One Page?

A page holds about 500 words single-spaced or 250 words double-spaced with a 12 pt font and 1-inch margins. The exact number depends on the font, spacing and how often you break paragraphs.

How Many Words on a Single-Spaced Page?

Expect roughly 450–600 words. Narrow fonts like Times New Roman sit at the top of that range, while wide fonts like Verdana fall well below it. Short paragraphs and dialogue leave blank space and pull the number down.

How Many Words on a Double-Spaced Page?

Expect roughly 250–300 words. Double spacing fits about half as many lines, which is why most teachers and publishers use 250 as the planning figure.

How Many Words on a Handwritten Page?

A handwritten page usually holds 150–250 words on standard ruled paper. Handwriting size varies a lot, so write one full page, count it, and enter that number as your words per page.

Good to know: New documents may not start with these settings. Microsoft Office now uses Aptos as its default font, and Google Docs usually starts in Arial 11 pt, but templates and versions differ. Check your document's font, size and spacing before you judge the page count.

How Font Size and Line Spacing Affect Page Count

Font, font size and line spacing change how many words fit on a page more than anything else. The same 1,000 words can fill anywhere from under 2 to nearly 5 pages depending on these settings.

Does Font Size Change the Number of Pages?

Yes. A bigger font makes each letter wider and each line taller, so you lose words on every line and lines on every page. Font choice matters too: Arial takes more room than Times New Roman at the same size, and Verdana and Courier New take far more.

Words Per Page by Font and Spacing

Font Single 1.5 Double
Times New Roman 12 pt~555~375~280
Arial 11 pt~605~405~295
Arial 12 pt~500~335~250
Calibri 11 pt~620~410~310
Georgia 12 pt~530~350~260
Verdana 12 pt~425~280~215
Courier New 12 pt~425~280~210

Estimated for US Letter paper with 1-inch margins, using the same formatting model as the calculator above. Your own document may differ.

Why 500 and 250 if the table shows more? The 500 and 250 figures are round rules of thumb that sit close to Arial 12 pt. A narrow font such as Times New Roman fits more, so its estimate is higher. For your own document, use the row that matches your font, or measure one real page.

How Does Line Spacing Affect Page Count?

Double spacing roughly doubles your page count because each page holds about half as many lines. Spacing of 1.5 lands in between, fitting about two-thirds of the single-spaced text. Extra space before or after paragraphs adds more pages on top of that.

How Do Margins and Paper Size Affect Page Count?

Wider margins shrink the space for text. On US Letter paper, moving the left and right margins from 1 inch to 1.5 inches cuts each line by about 15%.

Paper size matters too. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is slightly narrower and taller than US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). It fits a few more lines but slightly fewer words on each line, so the overall difference is small and depends on your settings. Legal paper is 3 inches taller than Letter.

Fits more words per page

Smaller font size, narrow fonts (Times New Roman), single spacing, narrow margins, long paragraphs.

Fits fewer words per page

Larger font size, wide fonts (Verdana, Courier New), double spacing, wide margins, headings, lists, tables and images.

How to Calculate Pages from Word Count

To calculate pages from word count, divide your total words by the number of words that fit on one page. To go the other way, multiply pages by words per page.

Words to Pages Formula

Pages = Total Words ÷ Words per Page

Pages to Words Formula

Words = Pages × Words per Page

Worked Example

You have a 3,200-word report.

  • Double-spaced: 3,200 ÷ 250 = 12.8 pages, so plan for 13 pages.
  • Single-spaced: 3,200 ÷ 500 = 6.4 pages, so plan for 7 pages.

How the Formatting-Based Estimate Is Calculated

When you open Advanced Page Settings, the calculator estimates words per page in four steps:

  1. Text area: page width and height minus the four margins.
  2. Lines per page: text height divided by line height (font size × the font's normal line height × your line spacing), rounded down.
  3. Words per line: text width divided by the font's average character width, then divided by about 6.1 characters per English word including the space after it.
  4. Allowance for real text: the result is reduced by 15% to allow for short last lines, paragraph breaks and word wrapping, then rounded to the nearest 5.

Font widths are averages for typical prose, not exact glyph measurements. The model does not reproduce Word's or Google Docs' layout engine, and it does not account for headings, images, tables, paragraph spacing or widow and orphan control. That is why every result is labelled as an estimate.

Find Your Own Words per Page

The most reliable figure comes from your own document:

  1. Format one page exactly as you will submit it.
  2. Select all the text on that full page.
  3. Read the word count in Word's status bar, or in Google Docs under Tools → Word count.
  4. Enter that number as Words per page in the calculator.

Words to Pages for Essays, Reports, and Books

Most academic work is double-spaced, so 250 words per page is the usual planning figure. Books are a different case: manuscripts use a 250-word convention, while printed pages depend on the book's trim size and typesetting.

Words to Pages for College Essays

MLA and APA both call for double spacing and 1-inch margins, and many instructors expect 12 pt Times New Roman. That puts a page at about 250–300 words. The 2026–27 Common App personal essay runs 250–650 words, so a full-length essay is about 2.5 double-spaced pages.

Words to Pages for Research Papers

APA 7th edition allows several fonts, including Times New Roman 12 pt, Calibri 11 pt, Arial 11 pt and Georgia 11 pt. Remember that the title page, abstract, references and appendices add pages that usually don't count toward the word limit.

Words to Pages for Novels and Manuscripts

Publishers judge manuscripts by word count, not pages. The traditional manuscript page is 250 words, so an 80,000-word novel is about 320 manuscript pages. In print, a 6 × 9 inch trade paperback page often holds roughly 250–350 words.

Document Type Typical Length Double-Spaced Pages
Short essay500–1,000 words2–4
Common App personal essay (2026–27)250–650 words1–2.6
Research paper3,000–5,000 words12–20
Short story1,000–7,500 words4–30
Novel manuscript70,000–100,000 words280–400

Typical ranges only. Always follow the length set by your instructor, journal or publisher.

How to Estimate Reading and Writing Time

Divide your word count by a reading speed to get reading time. Most adults read silently at about 200–250 words per minute, which is why the calculator uses 200 as its default.

How Long Does It Take to Read 1,000 Words?

Reading 1,000 words takes about 4–5 minutes at an average pace. A 2019 review of reading studies by Marc Brysbaert (Journal of Memory and Language) put the average adult silent reading rate for English non-fiction at around 238 words per minute. Reading aloud (about 183 words per minute in the same review) and giving a talk are slower. The speeds below are planning figures, rounded to the nearest half minute.

Pace Words per Minute Time for 1,000 Words
Giving a talkAbout 130~8 min
Reading aloudAbout 183~5.5 min
Slow or careful reading150~7 min
Average reading200–2504–5 min
Fast reading300~3 min

How Long Does It Take to Write 1,000 Words?

Typing alone takes about 25 minutes at an average speed of 40 words per minute. Real writing is slower because you stop to think, research and edit, so a casual 1,000-word draft often takes 45 minutes to 2 hours, and a researched academic piece can take much longer.

For longer projects, use the Manuscript Planner tab. Enter your target, current words and daily goal to see how many days you need to finish.

Expert Tips for Estimating Page Count Accurately

A practical way to get a closer page count is to measure your own formatting instead of relying on a general rule. These tips help you get close before you submit.

Pro Tips

  • Measure one real page. Count the words on one full page of your formatted draft and use that number as your words per page.
  • Read the brief first. If an assignment gives both a word limit and a page limit, ask which one is graded.
  • Count only the body. Title pages, references and appendices usually don't count toward a word limit, but they still add pages.
  • Leave a buffer. Headings, bullet lists, quotes and tables take more space than plain paragraphs.
  • Use a preset. The MLA Style, Academic Paper and Manuscript presets load common settings in one tap.

Avoid This Mistake

Don't stretch a short paper by quietly enlarging the font, margins or spacing. Instructors notice, and word limits exist for exactly this reason. Write to the word target, then check the page count.
